The tip of the spear for Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR) precision is here! Alabama Precision Gunworks is proud to introduce the first ever precision shim kit designed for professionals and do-it-yourself gunsmiths.
The AR platform has been around since the 1950’s, but it took almost a half of a century for the platform to reach it’s true potential.Today, the MSR is truly the “modular” platform of the century, but with any modular part, adaptability is key. Adaptability requires tolerance and tolerance requires a sacrifice of precision. Let’s face it, the average Joe is not going to spend hundreds of dollars on a custom matched upper/lower receiver set to get decent 1/2 MOA groups for plinking.
The MSR’s 2-piece design must incorporate tolerances so the firearm’s main components can work on other guns from different manufacturers. Due to the increased popularity of DIY gunsmiths building the MSR platform in the comfort of their home, all too often will the builder experience the dreaded upper/lower multilateral play; This play robs your rifle or pistol of it’s true precision potential. Solutions have surfaced in years past. Most notably, the Accu-Wedge was probably one of the first to try and correct this problem.
I want to discuss accuracy and precision for a moment. Many think of the two as synonymous, but understand that accuracy is not precision and precision is not accuracy; Each have their own relationship and accuracy solely belongs to the shooter. Is a rubber Accu-Wedge the solution for precision? In the real world, rubber wedges sit between the butt stock and our shoulders to dampen recoil; Should rubber, a material susceptible to shock and compression, be charged with the task of precise alignment of firearm components?
If you answered no, you probably understand why the upper tension set screw came about. Though a set screw can hide lateral play it will remove all Z axis (up and down) play. Most are topped with a nylon tip and like rubber, nylon will compress and develop a memory. This is why Alabama Precision Gunworks sells brass tipped tension set screws. There is still a flaw…….
Even with a brass tipped set screw, when the weapon fires, the platform is susceptible to harmonic vibrations that can take advantage of the lovely tolerance variations that allow for the word modular to exist. The APG Shim Kits provide all the tools necessary to shim out this play so you achieve repeatable results each time you squeeze the trigger.
Our kits include 3 sets of shims that fit most common tolerance differences, a brass tipped upper tension set screw, and all the materials necessary to install the shims on your rifle or pistol.
The process is easy and requires little skill to install the shims. The APG shim kit is the first step in harvesting the true precision potential of your rifle. I have even included a FREE installation video to see you through your efforts; All that you need to do is add the that most suits you to your shopping cart!
APG Shims are made in the USA, under strict tolerances and are composed of the finest American alloy steels available. All profits from the APG kits go to fund the research and development of cutting edge gunsmith tools. Proceeds will also fund my gunsmith how-to videos on YouTube.
Since were on the topic, I almost forgot…Here is an installation video for you to check out:
